Youn Yuh Jung was awarded the Best Supporting Actress award for her roles as Soon Ja in this bilingual film. Minari is about a Korean family which moves from California to a farm in Arkansas. The film portrays the way the family tries to hold on to their Korean traditions and also fit in with the American culture. Soon Ja plays the grandmother who moved to America to take care of her grandchildren.

Another Round

Winning the award for the best Internation Feature Film is the Danish, Swedish and Dutch film Another Round. It focuses on the lives of four teachers who test how their lives change by consuming alcohol every day. What starts to be fun ends up becoming chaos. The Pixar and Disney film Soul won an award for being the best animate feature film and having the best original score. Joe teaches middle school band. Promising Young Woman won an Oscar for its original screenplay. In this movie, Cassandra Thomas pretends to be drunk and waits for a nice man to approach her and help. She tests if they are really nice as they portray or if they take advantage of her intoxicated condition. Through this, Cassandra Thomas tries to avenge her friend who was raped in the past. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

The movie follows blues singer Ma Rainey’s recording session in the 1920s and is fictionalised for dramatic effect. The movie won an award for its makeup and hairstyling. It also won the Best Costume Design award. You can stream this movie on Netflix. 

Sound of Metal

After a drummer starts losing his hearing ability, his girlfriend admits him to a rehab facility. Truly welcomed there, he struggles to choose between his new and old life. It won the Best Film Editing and Best Sound awards and is available to stream on Amazon Prime.
